Comment on cooperative learning

I recently watched the video of Kagan structures of cooperative learning and found the ideas amazing
For proponents of alternative teaching styles, Kagan has become one of the most revolutionary learning strategies . The ideas of Kagan are about getting our students involved and interacting with each other.

What I watched on the video was a kind of teaching and learning quite different from that that we are used to . Students are not sitting on the rows , they are not asked to be quiet but the only thing that teacher is doing to give them instructions and help them . Students from different races, sexes and abilities are all enjoying the lesson . Some benefits of kagan structures are that students produce higher achievements , they have more pozitive relationships and a wider circle of friends .
In addition , students produce greater intrinsic motivation , higher self-esteem and greater social suppoort.

On the other hand , moving towards the disadvantages of cooperative learning , the first thing that we come across is that students have a lack of social skill .Especially  in Albania that we are used to traditional methods of teaching , students would not know how to work in groups and this may result in conflicts between them .

As a future teacher,  I am a big fun of Kagan structures and I wil incorporate a number of these structures into elements of my lesson . I find them really interesting and useful teaching tools for promoting communication and cooperation , especially among the more passive , less engaged pupils.

  1. I think it is efficient when you put in balance the advantages and drawbacks of a certain learning technique, because in this way you know what are the strong points of it and you also work harder to cover the gaps. I would also like to make use of some of the activities of the Cooperative Structure in my teaching.

  2. I totally agree with you about the way of organizing the classroom, the pupils are free to collaborate with each other, this also makes them free to express themselves. In fact, what I really liked the most about this video is that pupils not only learn by the teacher instructions, but they also learn from each other. Sometimes even your friends can be good teachers for you, because you can understand better the simple explanation of your friend than the teacher explanation. :)

  5. Hi Aurora! I agree with all the points you have mentioned on your comment about Kagan methods. What I realy liked from this methods is that students are not going to learn the things by heart.

  6. Hi Aurora!I totally agree with you that this method is quite different from that we were used to. Kagan structures have more advantages than disadvantages. I think that the use of Kagan structures can develop social skills, since students interact with each other and share their point of views.
As a future teacher, I also hope to use this method in the teaching process.
    Good luck, future teacher!! :)

Now I am clear about the goals , student needs , setting and activities that I am going to use .Although I as student have faced difficulties in learning idioms , I strongly believe that my students will learn idioms in a easier way . My topic for this project is "FOOD IDIOMS " and I am going to teach food idioms at students that have achieved intermediate level .

Week 10

Hello everyone ! I want to share something with you . Read it :)  “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” – Confucius It is easy for teachers to spend so much time and energy focused on their students’ progress that they forget to consider their own performance. Self reflection can be a valuable tool that helps make you aware of how you are teaching, which in turn makes you a better teacher. Teaching without reflection is teaching blind – without any knowledge of effectiveness. It can be difficult and time consuming for teachers to scrutinize their performance, but like any other occupation it is essential for improvement. Asking deliberate questions, reflecting on the answers, then implementing changes on how you approach your teaching based on your reflection  differentiates decent teachers from great teachers.
